Any Painters Out There?

September 2nd, 2008 Posted in church stuff, random | No Comments »

This week at the church, we’re looking to put a fresh coat of paint on the bathroom walls. If you’d be willing to give an hour or two to help paint this week, we’d appreciate it! Shoot me an email (mrouse@akronfree.org), call the church office (716.542.2644), or comment on this post and we’ll talk more about day/time.

Thanks!

PS - Clean and nice looking bathrooms will have more of an impact than you think!

Hey Christians… Please Stop

Rebecca and I went to Old Navy today (Labor Day Sale) and on the way there, at a relatively busy intersection, we saw two men standing at the corner with signs, Bibles, and screaming voices. One of the guys was holding a sign that read “Repent or Die…” and he was holding it in the air as he shouted at cars waiting at traffic lights. Usually, I just brush this behavior off, but today it really got me mad and this is why:

  • As a pastor and as a follower of Christ who genuinely cares about people, I find this behavior to be completely selfish. These two guys really didn’t care about people deciding to follow Christ, all they cared about was satisfying themselves so that they could say, “I witnessed today.“
  • I know a lot of pastors and have a good deal of friends who work hard during the week at improving the Church, working creatively to find new ways to reach people and making connections with people. It really bothered me to watch people in their cars laugh at these two guys and saying to themselves, “Look at these idiots!” I truly believe that in Western New York today, the reputation of Christ and His Church took a negative hit because of these two guys and it’s not easy to shake a negative reputation.
  • When did Christ stand on the corner shouting at people? I know he served people, cared about people, and spoke TRUTH IN LOVE, but when did He scream at people?
This really got me fired up, I really think Christians who stand on street corners and scream at people about hell are selfish. The only thing I’m more mad at right now is that I didn’t pull over and ask them, for the sake of Jesus, to just stop.
Any thoughts???
